COURSE
DESCRIPTION: |
Learn the most important techniques in the composition of haiku and Zen poetry. The course offers a substantial theoretical basis, with many examples from famous Japanese poets. By the end of this course, students will be able to write both haiku and Zen poetry. They will also acquire enough theory in order to support their creative endeavors. |
I got such a kick out of Dan Deleanu's course on haiku that I wrote a whole manuscript of haiku and recently submitted it to Tupelo Press to see if they will publish it. Also, one of my haiku won an honorable mention in the Hipster Haiku contest sponsored by NYC. Dan is one of your great teachers there at your school. - Tom |

INFORMATION: |
I teach with enthusiasm and dedication. My teaching can be both academic and non-conformist, depending on the character of the lesson. I respond as quickly as I can to any questions and I don't hesitate to spend considerably more time with students than initially planned. Still, I never rewrite my students' work because I believe that it is they who are studying to be authors and not me. I think that it's wrong to get involved too much in the most intimate process of creation of the students, because this could have a negative influence upon their originality. Nevertheless, I provide sufficient suggestions and comments , but I always give the last word to the student, since poetry, unlike other literary genres, is extremly subjective and equivocal in its essence. And who knows if among these students there isn't a Walt Whitman or a Matsuo Basho... |
